BOMBAY: About 1,798 casualties were treated in Bombay city hospitals as a result of Friday afternoon’s explosions and fire, says a press note.

The total death-toll to date is 336. The fires are now completely under control, and only a few buildings are smouldering. Demolition squads were busy throughout Sunday and Monday blowing up badly damaged buildings and clearing the affected area.

It appeared that as soon as the first explosion occurred people in the area hurriedly managed to load carts with their goods and prepared to leave but before many could do so there followed the second explosion when they all left in many cases abandoning loaded carts. Despite the confusion that followed and the fact that goods lay unattended, hardly one case of theft has so far been registered.

The military authorities have issued a warning that some unexploded ammunition may have blown into the streets. It is dangerous to touch anything that looks like a shell or cartridge and finders are asked to report the [location] of any such material immediately to the nearest police station. (Dawn, Delhi)
