LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday admitted for regular hearing a petition for legislation to punish those indulging in cannibalism.

Advocate Kashif Sulemani filed the petition following minor sentence handed down to two brothers in Bhakkar on charges of eating human flesh in 2011.

The lawyer submitted that there was no specific law to punish cannibals in the country though the crime was of heinous nature.

He said the two brothers, after serving the two-year jail term, returned to their home and again indulged in cannibalism.

He said more such criminals would escape the due punishment if proper legislation was not introduced. The petitioner asked the court to order the government to make laws in order to punish cannibals.

Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh heard initial contention and sought replies from federal law ministry and Punjab government within a fortnight.
