LAHORE: The City District Government of Lahore has moved a local judicial magistrate, seeking order for the registration of a case against cricketer Umar Akmal and the caterer for violating the one-dish restriction.

The CDGL has also got an FIR lodged against the owner of a farmhouse on Baidian Road and the caterer for violating Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code imposed on implementing observance of timing of 10pm in marriage functions.

“Our staff belonging to the Wagah Town Municipal Administration witnessed flouting of the Punjab Marriage Function Act-2006 under which the wedding organizers are allowed to serve one-dish to the participants. Similarly, the time limit of 10pm fixed for winding up the marriage function under the act as well as section 144 was also violated,” DCO Dr Ahmad Javaid Qazi told Dawn on Thursday.

He said since it had been proved, the CDGL had moved a complaint to the court of area judicial magistrate and sought its order for getting a case registered against Umar Akmal for allegedly placing order to the caterer for arranging more dishes than one and the caterer for fulfilling it despite knowing the law.

Talking about violation of timing, the DCO said an FIR had also been lodged with the police station concerned against the farmhouse owner and the caterer for violating the Section 144. “We became lenient on this violation with a view that the groom could be unaware of this due to his engagements. That is why we got the FIR lodged against the farmhouse owner and the caterer,” he clarified.

He said under the law, the judicial magistrate would summon the cricketer and the caterer for recording their stance/statement. After hearing both the parties, the court might order police to register a case against Umar and the caterer. He said if the charges proved, the accused might be given a punishment of three-month imprisonment or fine of Rs100,000 or both.

Umar Akmal’s elder brother cricketer Kamran was not available for comments.
