RAWALPINDI: A jail warden was caught selling mobile phone cards to the inmates of Adiala Jail. A security source said the warden, Babar Mumtaz, who was posted to the Barrack No 3, confessed to selling phone cards to the prisoners at higher prices.

The jail warden was suspended and an inquiry launched against him, he added.

Recently, intelligence agencies reported that within a month over 3,500 phone calls were made from Adiala Jail by the prisoners, most of whom involved in high-profile terrorism cases and belonging to the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The authorities concerned have already started investigations to trace the individuals who had received the phone calls from the prisoners.

On the reports of the intelligence agencies, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif directed the departments concerned to carry out a similar exercise in other prisons in the province.

It may be noted that jammers have already been installed in the prison to block signals but still the prisoners make phone calls in connivance with the jail wardens.

At present, more than 65 prisoners involved in high-profile terrorism cases are being kept in the Adiala Jail.
